Viking has been an engineering- and design-driven company for 55 years. Fueled by a passion to innovate, we continue to create exciting new models so our owners can enjoy countless hours on the water. In one of our latest pioneering efforts, we’ve taken the attributes of three different types of Vikings – the convertible, the open express and the Billfish – and melded them into a fun, practical and stylish owner-operator yacht: the 38 Open Billfish.

Like her stablemates the 38 Billfish and 46 Billfish, this model is somewhat of a throw-back with an open design and emphasis on practicality and ease of operation and maintenance. But she’s also very much a sporty, fish-and-cruise yacht with the same versatile command-deck design of the Viking open express boat.

Like all of our fishing boats, the Billfish series can be outfitted with a tuna tower designed and fabricated by the Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers (PBT). The upper helm has a clean user-friendly layout that includes a Garmin GPSMAP8610, a stainless steel wheel, a flush-mounted compass, Cummins electronic controls and Lenco trim tab switches.

From the tower, the captain has a bird’s eye view of the business end of the boat. The cockpit includes many of the design elements of our tournament-winning convertibles, with rounded coamings for comfort, ample toekick for balance (and maximum deck space), a large transom door (with lift gate) and a raised live well. Dual in-deck insulated fishboxes with drains to auto pump outs, stainless steel flush-mounted rod holders and top-shelf hardware (e.g., cleats, hawse pipes, hinges, latches and scuppers) are some of the other notable features.

PBT‘s craftsmanship is on full display here, with a half dozen rod holders fused to the tower’s horizontal rail and six more lining the structure’s aft legs. Mezzanine seats (another convertible hallmark) flank the centerline walkthrough to the command deck. An optional four-sided Costa Clear enclosure provides weather protection while maintaining clear views.

Relax in the climate-controlled comfort of the 38 Open Billfish’s salon-like command deck. The area affords an abundance of seating, with port and starboard L-shaped lounges and storage below. The optional Release Marine helm and companion chairs boast teak ladder backs and premium upholstery. From the raised centerline command station, the captain has excellent visibility.

The fiberglass helm pod (with optional teak finish) is home to a stainless steel steering wheel, Palm Beach-style controls and trim tab switches. The Cummins Inboard Joystick System brings a new level of confidence in close quarters and around the docks. Twin 16-inch multi-function displays anchor a complete Garmin package, installed by Viking‘s Atlantic Marine Electronics.

The engineroom, lazarette and forward bilges are painted with Snow White Awlgrip for increased visibility. The Cummins QSB 6.7 550MHP diesels and other machinery are located beneath the electrically-actuated fiberglass seating modules that open outboard for plenty of room for routine inspections and maintenance. In addition, there’s a large center hatch for quick access to the engineroom.

You’ll find the same high-quality accommodations of Viking‘s larger yachts on the 38 Open Billfish. Attractive high-gloss teak cabinetry, Amtico teak-and-holly flooring and recessed overhead LED lighting adorn the interior. A starboard-side sofa seats up to four and doubles as a bunk. There’s also a full head with shower aft of the galley.

The galley is appointed with Corian countertops, a sink, a two-burner recessed stove, drawer-style under-counter refrigerator and freezer units and a microwave oven. All cabinetry is finished with a maple interior. The forward portion of the cabin features a lower two-person bunk and an upper single, along with a hanging locker and starboard upper storage.
