Inside the Legacy 42

What makes a motor yacht a Legacy? This line from Tartan Marine has built a legacy among yacht owners based on its sophisticated design, exceptional performance and superior value.

But those are just fancy words. If you want to know what makes the Legacy 42 a true legacy, you’ve got to look inside. Underneath. In the engine room. And throughout the expansive, finely detailed cabins.

Start with the power plant. The Legacy 42 is powered by its twin Volvo 450 IPS electronic engines. IPS stands for Inboard Performance Systems, and on this boat, all the power systems are integrated: the twin diesels, steerable drive pods, forward-facing and counter rotating propellors, the electronic steering system, shift and throttle. Getting into and out of tight dockside spaces is a dream with the joystick controls. And all this technology helps deliver a 20% higher top speed, 50% lower perceived sound, and 30 percent reduced fuel consumption.

Outside, the Mark Ellis-designed hull is a throwback to the Downeaster lines. When you add the sweeping external look to the advanced composites used in its construction, you end up with an incredibly efficient yacht that can keep its plane even at 10-12 knots with a lower running angle that boosts fuel efficiency. It looks good, and it works good.

Last but not least, a quick inspection of the interior reveals a company that does not skimp on the small stuff. Notice not only the fine materials used in this boats cabins and interior spaces–the cherry cabinetry and trim, the solid stock Sapelle planked and varnished cabin sole, the solid teak swim platform and steering wheel–but note the fine workmanship found throughout. A company that takes the time to do the small things right will usually produce a superior product overall.

There’s more to love in the Legacy 42. The Bridge deck is surrounded with large windows which not only makes passengers feel like they are relaxing in a luxury solarium, but gives the captain almost 360 degrees of visibility. The memory-foam mattress in the owner’s cabin rests atop an island berth with ample storage spaces. The efficient galley comes equipped with a two-burner electric stove, built in convection/microwave, built in coffee maker and separate refrigerator and freezer compartments.

This boat’s legacy is quality engineering and top-notch workmanship, from stem to stern. If you’re looking for the best, come in and take one out for a spin.
