Prevent CO2 Poisoning Onboard Your Boat

Carbon monoxide is odorless, tasteless, and it can be an especially deadly killer for boaters. In fact, there have been more than 140 boating-related carbon monoxide deaths since 2000, and more than 800 carbon monoxide poisonings. With symptoms that are similar to sea sickness or intoxication, carbon monoxide poisoning can be hard for boaters to distinguish. But it is largely preventable. Here’s how to prevent CO2 poisoning onboard your boat.

  • An onboard carbon monoxide detector is your best defense against carbon monoxide poisoning. Have one installed in each cabin, and check your detectors regularly.
  • Keep in mind that if your boat is idling, or nearby boats are idling, carbon monoxide can accumulate on your deck, especially if you’re near a seawall or at the dock.
  • Never block exhaust outlets. It can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide in the cabin and cockpit areas.
  • Avoid activities on the rear deck, swim platform and near exhaust pipes when your boat’s engine or generator is running.
  • Only operate heaters, generators and stoves in well-ventilated areas.
  • Inspect your exhaust system regularly to make sure no exhaust is leaking from it. Check for any rust, black streaking, or cracked and corroded fittings.
